Tree of Life – Level 2, Lesson 5: The Law 5
Healing
Healing physical diseases through the power of right thinking rests entirely on the theory that we are surrounded by an Infinite Mind, which has within its memory the Word spoken by the Creator, which will always motivate the three great powers of the God force through the triune Law, bringing forms of matter into manifestation on the Earth plane.
People have been healed by prayer and faith — no question about that. But, as it is often asked, would God heal one person and not another, would He answer some prayers and reject others? Why have some prayers been answered and others not?
The only possible answer is that prayer being a certain mental attitude and a certain way of believing, some prayers reach a certain state of belief, while others fall short.
True prayer stimulates a knowing of god which nothing else can, and it often causes one who prays to rise to a point in mental awareness where the healing work may be done according to the law of the universe, which is the law of mind, the law of THE TRIANGLE.
There should be no objection to any form of healing, whether by prayer or by pill. Physicians do wonderful work and deserve our gratitude. There is importance in proper food, exercise, clothing, sanitation, clean water and clean air, and everything that is real and sensible. But, in as much as man’s life, in reality, is spiritual and mental, no form of cure will be permanent until the thought pattern is healed. There is a law higher than the physical, and spiritual physicians use it.
We reject the contention that the Truth has been once and for all time given and that it cannot be added to or taken away from. We expect more knowledge along that line.
There are but few real truths and the only wisdom that can be added is the examples and the description of how these truths effect different power and force — also the energies that make up or are used by them.
We know that the authority of man is, in most cases, an assumption without knowing the reality or the basic rules, and we refuse to be hypnotized into believing any man-made mandate. The Law of assumption is almost a part of the working of the triune Law.
Mental healing must also be spiritual healing; the two cannot be divorced. A belief in duality has made man sick, and the understanding of Unity alone will heal him. Every treatment must carry with it a realization of God if it is to be a good treatment.
Thoughts are things; thought is intelligent and has power within itself to objectify itself. Belief or knowing makes thought very powerful.
Thoughts of sickness make man sick; thoughts of health and perfection will heal him. Realization of the Presence of God is the most powerful healing agency known to the mind of man. We can heal only to the degree that we can think from the higher motive; so we should constantly be on the alert, seeking to embody higher thoughts.
God holds man in His Consciousness as a Perfect Being, since the Perfect Mind could not conceive of an imperfect idea. If we think of man as a part of God, we have to realize that man, as part of the Divine Being, must inherently be perfect.
Yet man does become sick, and he suffers. That’s because man also is an individual and does with himself what he wills:
“God hath made man upright, but they have sought out many inventions.” (Eccl. 7:29)
A man may deface or even destroy himself, but he cannot destroy the Divine Image.
The body, devoid of mentality, cannot think, see, hear, feel, touch, smell, or taste. Without the mentality, the body becomes a corpse, disintegrating and resolving into the Universal Substance or unformed matter, from which it came.
Man develops images of thought, some of them false. Healing is accomplished by uncovering, neutralizing, and erasing false images of thought and letting the perfect idea, or ideal, reflect itself through subjective mind in the body.
Our thought can bring out a condition as perfect as we can conceive; therefore, the man whose thought is the most Godlike will be the best healer. That is why we cannot divorce true mental healing from true spiritual work.
A practitioner does not necessarily treat every organ of the body specifically — not at the beginning of the treatment anyway — but he does declare the body to be harmonious and every specific idea within it to be harmonious. He then pays special attention to what appears to be the physical disorder.
Healing is not use of the power of suggestion; metaphysical healing deals with a Universal Principle, or Law, which takes the impress of our thought and acts upon it.
Nothing can stop it! Some day we shall know that not even the thought of the patient can stop it.
The Law knows nothing about disease: it only acts. Therefore, there is no incurable disease.
Very few diseases are inherited, in spite of what you hear to the contrary. But there are those who do inherit a subjective receptivity toward, and a belief in, certain ailments. Children, as they grow older, also react subjectively to talk about death, contention, and other trouble, and the health suffers.
Race-suggestion — the accumulated subjective tendencies of the human race — is another prolific source of disease.
In summary, the sources from which most diseases come are: conscious observations; suppressed emotions; subjective inherited tendencies; and perhaps the source of three-fourths of them, race-suggestion.
Disease may be likened unto a coward, fleeing from the Truth. There is nothing but the Truth; there is no limitation imposed upon any man anywhere. But almost all the world is hypnotized into false thinking through race concept; what we need to do is dehypnotize it.
Since disease is contagious through suggestion, we must surround our patients with an aura, or atmosphere, of protection. This is nothing less than the realization of the Presence and the Power of God and Spirit, as the only Life there is and as complete and perfect in them.
To heal, you must first recognize the perfection of your own thoughts, then build up the same recognition for your patient. After that, you directly attack the thought that binds the patient, recognizing and so stating that your word destroys his false thought. Finish your treatment with a great realization of peace, sitting there a few minutes in silent recognition that IT IS DONE, complete and perfect.
The work must not be thought of as hard. It is a direct statement in Mind of what we wish to have done and a complete recognition that IT IS DONE.
Those that do not realize that mental healing is possible do not understand the meaning of Causation, that Intelligence is back of all things, that there is but one Fundamental Intelligence in the Universe, One Common Mind, of One Mind common to all people. What we appear to be is simply the point where this Mind manifests through us.
Every disease must first have a subjective cause. That subjective cause, in nine out of ten, is not conscious in the thought of the person who has it; in other words, it may result from the coalescence of certain combinations of thought; it may come out of the subconscious, where it was originally placed by the conscious mind.
Actually no one needs to be healed, because health is an omnipresent reality, and when the obstructions to healing are removed, you’ll find that health was there all the time.
A spiritual physician must have no doubts, and when he finds he has thoughts of doubt, he must first treat himself against those thoughts. Doubt is a barrier to healing, but it only a thought, which can be removed by a positive thought.
Why doesn’t God heal us, keep us perfect? Because He gave us independence, and in using, or misusing, that independence, we have made ourselves sick, and we must heal ourselves. But we can go only as far as we know; few have the understanding to set a broken bone; so we refer to an orthopedist.
Most people don’t have the understanding to walk on water; so we take a boat. But we must continue to affirm the Truth about disease; one may continue to wear glasses, but if he keeps on declaring that there is One Perfect Vision seeing through him, he soon will be healed and not need glasses.
There is no need to touch a patient while healing. Such contact may transmit energy from practitioner to patient, but we do not think of disease as anything connected with the patient. We realize that disease is nothing but a mental picture, to be eradicated by clear thinking.
